4 Pianos, written in 1998 and premiered in January of 1999, features four mechanical pianos played by a computer. This work draws a large sound landscape and how it evolves in time. The initial section presents a great amount of micro-detail contained within a wide pitch-range. An increasing number of "anomalies" slowly disintegrate the initial behavior into a narrower area centered in the middle register of the keyboards. The remaining sections follow a spiraling-out in progressively wider gestures while accumulating past with recently introduced information.
4 Pianos was awarded the Gould Family Foundation Young Composers Award (2000), and the Ojai Festival Music for Tomorrow (2001).
